Straight to the point of dry needling

Dry needling (DN) is used to relieve pain by relaxing trigger points (TPs) caused by musculoskeletal dysfunction. TPs can develop in muscles through poor posture, repetitive actions or chronic sports injuries, these small points of tension within muscles can have a huge impact on you, as they can refer pain to other areas of your body resulting in such things as severe headaches or sciatica.

The aim of DN is to release these TPs in order to restore proper muscular function by decreasing pain and increasing range of movement (ROM).

What conditions can dry needling help?

Dry needling is often used along side other therapeutic modalities and rehabilitation programs. It is an excellent, extremely effective treatment and can be used to treat a wide range of acute and chronic conditions that cause pain and/or decreased ROM such as:

• Neck and back pain

• Tennis/Golfers Elbow

• Headaches

• Plantar Fasciitis

• Muscular tightness

• Sciatica

• Gluteal pain

• Muscle strains

More than one session of DN is essential to longer lasting effects and for deep or chronic TP’s.

Difference between acupuncture and dry needling:

DN:

• Needles are inserted directly into a TP, gently manipulated and removed after a short length of time

• Treats specific neuromuscular problems that are causing pain or limiting movement

• Based on western neuroanatomy and modern science

Acupuncture:

• Needles are inserted into meridian points around the body and generally left in for longer

• Seeks to affect the flow of energy around the body

• Based on traditional ancient Chinese medicine

Procedure:

• A very thin, solid filament needle is gently inserted into the muscle straight into the TP in order to release it and ultimately reduce pain, discomfort and correct any muscular imbalances it causes. There is no sharp pain when the needle is inserted, many clients don’t feel the needle being inserted at all.

• Once the needle has reached the TP, a local twitch response is induced; an involuntary and brief muscle twitch, an aching sensation may be felt at this point – a bit like cramp. This is followed by a release in tension and normal muscle function can resume.

• Once the TP has released and shows a decrease in tension, the needle is then slowly removed.

What to expect post treatment:

Many clients feel the positive effects immediately after a session, finding the tight muscles have released and they are able to move more freely; however it can take a couple of days to feel the full benefits, so don’t be put off if the effects aren’t immediate!

You many feel sore at the site of treatment or the surrounding area. Typically this soreness can last anywhere from a couple of hours and two days, but fear not! Any soreness felt can be relieved by applying heat or ice to the area and giving the specific muscle a gentle stretch.
